WHERE IT COMES FROM
Pequi (pronounced pay-key) Oil comes from the Pequi fruit, which is sustainably harvested from- yes; you guessed it- the Pequi tree. Legend to have formed from the body of the spirit god Yakajakuma, the Pequi tree grows in the Cerrado Biome, a vast, tropical savanna ecoregion of Brazil. Nicknamed “Cerrado's Gold” the local love affair with Pequi goes back a long, long time and is rooted in myth, metaphor, and belief about the human condition and the unity of masculine and feminine as the basic economic partnership.
The Mehinakut, an ancient indigenous tribe of Brazil, considered food, eating and sexuality as synonymous. Back in the day, the Mehinaku planted gardens of Pequi trees around their villages. The Mehinaku have since abandoned their once-thriving, ancient communities. Yet these ruins remain, surrounded by breathtaking orchards of naturally growing Pequi trees.
The Pequi tree remains of utmost importance to the Cerrado’s local communities. The production of Pequi oil is a rustic activity, passed from generation to generation. It’s done by hand, in small batches, and begins only after the Pequi tree naturally releases its fruit to the ground. Pequi oil production constitutes or supplements the main income of these local communities contributing both cultural significance and economic value.
